Brad Dourif: A Character Actor Par Excellence
Early Life and EducationBrad Dourif was born in Murray, Kentucky, and graduated from Calloway County High School in California. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Theatre from Murray State University before moving on to the DePaul University Theatre School, where he received his Master's degree alongside classmates John Reilly and Gillian Anderson.
Early Career in Theatre and Film
While building his resume in Chicago theatre, Dourif decided to pursue a career in Los Angeles, where he currently resides. His first major film role was in the 1991 action flick "Backdraft." He gained wider recognition for playing the mentally challenged Warren, Cameron Diaz's character's brother, in "There's Something About Mary."
Notable Film and Television Roles
Dourif has appeared in numerous films, including "Scream" (1996), "Being John Malkovich" (1999), and "The Alamo"; television credits include "Lost" (2006), "CSI" (2000), "Six Feet Under" (2001), "Charmed" (2001), and "The X-Files" (1993).
Deadwood and Writing Credits
Dourif joined the cast of "Deadwood" in its first season in 2004. The series, created by David Milch, followed the rise of a town in the American West. Dourif portrayed Dan Dority, the trusted henchman of ambitious saloon owner Al Swearengen. He remained a cast member for three seasons. Dourif also joined the "Deadwood" writing staff in season 3, penning the episode "The Continuing Thrum."
American Crime and Other Projects
In 2014, Dourif landed a series regular role in the ABC anthology series "American Crime." He is also a co-founder of the country band The Sacred Cowboys, where he serves as vocalist and guitarist.
