Wilhelm I, King of Württemberg
Early Life and Military ServiceBorn in Silesia on October 27, 1781, Wilhelm was the eldest son of Frederick William of Württemberg (later King Frederick I) and Augusta of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel. Serving in the Prussian military under his father, he joined the Austrian army briefly in 1800 and distinguished himself at the Battle of Hohenlinden.
Royal Life
After his father's coronation in 1806, Wilhelm returned to Württemberg and lived in relative seclusion until 1812. During Napoleon's invasion of Russia, he commanded the Württemberg contingent and subsequently fell ill, returning home from Vilnius after his recovery.
Reign
Wilhelm succeeded his father to the throne on October 30, 1816. He pledged to promote the well-being of his people and, with the support of his second wife, Ekaterina Pavlovna, established a constitutional monarchy in 1819.
Wilhelm was an astute and ambitious ruler. He opposed Metternich's reactionary policies and sought to unite medium-sized German states against the major powers. However, he eventually backed down due to Prussia's decisive actions and internal divisions among the smaller states.
Personal Life
Wilhelm married three times: Charlotte of Bavaria in 1808 (divorced in 1814), Ekaterina Pavlovna in 1816 (died in 1819), and Pauline of Württemberg in 1820. He had eight children:

Legacy
Wilhelm I died in 1864 and was succeeded by his son, Karl. He was buried alongside Ekaterina Pavlovna in the Grabkapelle on Rotenberg in Stuttgart. His legacy includes a well-governed kingdom and the establishment of the Orthodox chapel in memory of his wife.
