Billy Magnussen: A Versatile American Actor
Early Life and EducationWilliam Gregory Magnussen, known professionally as Billy Magnussen, was born on April 20, 1985, in the Woodhaven neighborhood of New York City. His parents, an aerobics instructor and a professional kickboxer/bodybuilder, later welcomed two younger brothers. Billy's maternal grandparents were Lithuanian immigrants.
At age 10, the Magnussen family relocated to Cumming, Georgia. Billy completed his secondary education at Forsyth Central High School and later attended the University of North Carolina School of the Arts.
Broadway Debut and Theatrical Success
In 2007, at age 22, Magnussen made his Broadway debut in "The Ritz," a production based on the farcical comedy by Terrence McNally. In 2012, he starred as Spike in Christopher Durang's "Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike," which earned him a Tony nomination for Best Featured Actor in a Play.
Magnussen has also collaborated with renowned actors such as Sigourney Weaver in "Sex with Strangers" and Anna Gunn in "The Accomplices."
Filmography
Magnussen's television debut was in the soap opera "As the World Turns," where he replaced Zach Roerig as Casey Hughes. He also appeared in spin-offs of the "Law & Order" franchise.
In film, Magnussen has starred in Steven Spielberg's "Bridge of Spies," the first season of "American Crime Story," and the comedy-action "Game Night."
In the fantasy-dramedy miniseries "Maniac," he played dual roles: Jed, the brother of Jonah Hill's character Owen, and Grimmsson, a figment of Owen's hallucinations.
Magnussen also played dual roles in the series "Tell Me a Story": Joshua "Nick" Sullivan, a teacher, and the Wolf from "Little Red Riding Hood."
In the live-action musical "Aladdin," he portrayed Prince Anders, the fiancé of Jasmine. He had previously played a prince in "Into the Woods."
Personal Life
Magnussen keeps his personal life private. The only known relationship publicly reported was with singer and actress Megan Hilty, with whom he co-starred in "The Good Wife."
He enjoys surfing, is an avid supporter of tennis star Rafael Nadal, and remains close with his brothers, who often appear on his social media accounts. Magnussen plays guitar in the New York-based band Reserved for Rondee.
Recent Projects and Honors
In 2021, Magnussen and Cristin Milioti starred as a married couple in the dark comedy series "Made for Love" for HBO Max.
He portrayed Logan Ash, a CIA agent, in the 2021 James Bond film "No Time to Die."
Magnussen has also appeared in the prequel film "The Many Saints of Newark" and the biographical drama "Harry Haft," further showcasing his versatility as an actor.
