William McMahon: Australia's Prime Minister
Early Life and EducationWilliam McMahon was born in Sydney on February 23, 1908, into one of Australia's oldest and wealthiest families. He attended St. Paul's College at the University of Sydney, where he studied law.
Legal and Military Service
After graduating, McMahon practiced law. During World War II, he served in the Australian Army.
Political Career
In 1949, McMahon was elected to parliament as a member of the Liberal Party. He quickly rose through the party ranks, holding several important positions. He played a significant role in developing Australia's national oil and mining industries and in expanding trade ties with Japan.
Ministerial Positions
In 1966, McMahon was elected deputy party leader and became federal treasurer. In 1969, he became minister for foreign affairs.
Leadership Conflict
McMahon's policy initiatives led to conflict with John McEwen, the leader of the Country Party. McEwen used his influence to prevent McMahon from becoming prime minister in 1968.
Premiership (1971-1972)
In 1971, however, the Liberals elected McMahon as their leader, and he became prime minister. During his tenure, McMahon faced rising inflation, unemployment, and numerous strikes. His conservative coalition was divided by factionalism, and the Labor Party's victory in the December 1972 election ended 23 years of Liberal government.
