Bogusław Kaplanowski, a prominent figure in Karaite history, holds the distinction of being the first official Gakham (spiritual leader) of the Troki Karaite community. Hailing from the esteemed Kaplan clan, he was born into a legacy of scholarship and spiritual guidance.

Early Life and Education

Kaplanowski received his early education at a Karaite elementary institution known as a midrash, where he earned the title of "erby." His command of ancient Hebrew and biblical texts was exceptional, though he lacked formal European higher education.

Election as Gakham

In 1863, following the enactment of the "Regulations Regarding the Rights of Karaites," which replaced the previous "Order for Governing the Spiritual Affairs of the Tauride Karaite Society" issued in 1837, Kaplanowski was elected Gakham by the Karaites of northwestern regions. The new regulations provided for the establishment of the Troki Karaite Spiritual Authority, akin to those already existing in Tauride and Odessa.

Justifications for a Troki Authority

The establishment of a Troki-based spiritual authority was motivated by the remoteness of the Troki Karaites from the seat of the Tauride and Odessa Gakham in Eupatoria. Additionally, the limited transportation infrastructure of the time made it challenging to maintain regular communication and oversight with Crimea.
