Biography of Winthrop E. Rockefeller
Early Life and EducationWinthrop E. Rockefeller was born in New York City to John D. Rockefeller Jr. and his wife, Abby Greene Aldrich. He was the fifth of six children, including Abigail, John, Nelson, Laurence, and David. In 1931, he enrolled at Yale University but was expelled in 1934 for misconduct. Winthrop then transferred to Loomis Chaffee School in Windsor, Connecticut, where he completed his education.
Military Service
In early 1941, Winthrop enlisted in the 77th Infantry Division and rose through the ranks to become a Colonel. He was awarded the Bronze Star with Oak Leaf Cluster and the Purple Heart for his bravery during a kamikaze attack on the USS Henrico during the Battle of Okinawa. His portrait was placed in the Hall of Fame for Infantry Officers at Fort Benning, Georgia.
Marriages and Personal Life
On February 14, 1948, Winthrop married his first wife, Jeannette Edris "Bobo" Sirs, in Florida. They had a son named Winthrop Paul seven months after their wedding. The couple divorced in 1954, with a contentious separation that involved accusations of Rockefeller's extensive pornography collection. Winthrop's second marriage was to Jeanette Bierbauer Berteau McDonnell in 1956. They had two children from Jeanette's previous marriages, Anna and Bruce.
Political and Philanthropic Career
Winthrop Rockefeller embarked on a successful career in philanthropy and politics. He funded the construction of a modeling school in Morrilton and played a significant role in establishing the Arkansas Arts Center in Little Rock. He also supported the development of medical institutions in impoverished counties and provided annual grants to colleges and universities in the state.
In 1966, Winthrop Rockefeller became the first Republican governor of Arkansas since Reconstruction. His administration faced opposition from Democratic lawmakers, but he successfully integrated schools and implemented reforms. He focused on improving the state's prison system and education, allocating funds for new educational institutions and higher teacher salaries.
Despite his accomplishments, Rockefeller faced challenges during his second term. He was defeated in his bid for re-election by Dale Bumpers, a charismatic Democratic candidate. Rockefeller continued to be involved in political and charitable activities until his death.
Legacy
Winthrop E. Rockefeller left a lasting legacy through numerous charitable organizations, scholarships, and the establishment of the Winthrop Rockefeller Foundation and the Winthrop Rockefeller Charitable Trust. His name also graces the Winrock shopping center in Albuquerque, New Mexico, which he co-developed with the state university.
