Martin Bucer

Early Life and Education

As a young student at the Latin school in Pforzheim, Martin Bucer latinized his name. He pursued higher education at the universities of Ingolstadt and Freiburg, initially studying medicine, then law, and finally theology.

Priesthood and Theological Career

After becoming a priest, Bucer served as a preacher and professor of theology at the University of Basel from 1515 to 1519. There, he met Ulrich Zwingli and corresponded with Martin Luther.

Involvement in the Reformation

In 1523, Bucer settled in Strasbourg, where he became the provost of St. Thomas. He played an active role in the Reformation movement, collaborating with Martin Bucer to formulate the "Confessio Tetrapolitana," a protestant confession that sought to bridge the gap between the teachings of Zwingli and Luther.
