Early Life and Education

Wolfgang Joop was born on November 18, 1944, in Potsdam, Germany. After graduating from high school, Joop began studying advertising psychology at his father's insistence, but soon realized he had no interest in the subject and dropped out.

Artistic Pursuits

Joop worked as a restaurateur before embracing his passion for art. In 1968, he enrolled in art school but again did not complete his studies.

Fashion Beginnings

Joop's fashion career began in 1970 when he and his wife, Karin, entered a fashion competition sponsored by the German magazine "Constanze" and won three top prizes. Following this success, Joop became the fashion editor of the women's magazine "Neue Mode."

Establishment of JOOP!

In 1978, Joop gained international recognition for his debut fur collection. He launched his first women's collection in 1982, followed by his first men's collection in 1985. Two years later, he introduced his first fragrance line, establishing the brand JOOP! with his surname in all caps and an exclamation mark, symbolizing energy. The brand soon expanded to include clothing, footwear, jewelry, eyewear, and fragrances.

Awards and Honors

Joop has received numerous accolades for his work, including the "Phil Dear Or" top designer award in 1983 and the "Golden Spindle" award from the European Silk Commission in 1984. In 1985, he became a guest lecturer in design at the "Berliner Hochschule der Künste." In 1987, the institute bestowed upon him the title of honorary professor.

Other Interests

Beyond fashion, Joop has a wide range of interests, including illustration, as evidenced by the exhibition of over 100 of his works at the Museum in Hamburg. He is also an avid art collector, focusing on contemporary paintings, sculptures, and furniture.

Philanthropy

Joop supports organizations that assist sexually abused children and those affected by HIV.

Personal Life

Joop married art student Karin Benatzky in 1970, but they later divorced. He has two daughters, Henriette and Florentina. A cosmopolitan by nature and profession, Joop maintains homes in Monte Carlo and Potsdam, where he has lived since 1998 after residing in Hamburg for several years.
