Jürgen Sparwasser was born on June 4, 1948, in Halberstadt, East Germany. He began his football career with local club Motor Halberstadt before joining 1. FC Magdeburg in 1966.

Sparwasser quickly established himself as a key player for Magdeburg, playing a pivotal role in their successful era in the 1970s. He made a record 529 appearances for the club, including 219 consecutive top-flight league matches. He also holds the club record for most appearances in the German Cup, with 69 games.

National Team

Sparwasser made his debut for the East German national team in 1969 and went on to become one of its most successful players. He was part of the squad that finished third at the 1972 Olympics and played in the 1974 World Cup.
