Early Life and Military Education
Vukoman Aračić was born in the village of Lanište in 1850. After completing four years of elementary school in Jagodina and six years of high school in Kragujevac, he entered the Artillery School in Belgrade in 1869. He graduated seventh out of 20 students in 1874, alongside future military leaders Božidar Janković and Leonidas Solarević.
Wars with Turkey (1876-1878)
During the Serbian-Turkish War, Aračić served as an adjutant for the General Staff of the Timok Corps. In the Russo-Turkish War for the Liberation of the Balkans, he was chief of staff of the Jagodina Brigade and participated in the Battle of Samokov. On January 11, 1878, he captured the Niš fortress.
Military Career in the Late 19th Century
In 1880, Aračić was assigned as a supply officer in the Šumadija Division. He traveled to Vienna to study engineering and returned in 1882 to become chief of staff of the engineering regiment. In 1885, he was promoted to captain first class and joined the General Staff. He served as chief of staff of the 1st Drina Division during the Serbo-Bulgarian War. Later, he held various positions in the central military administration, including chief of the Operations Department and deputy chief of the General Staff.
High-Ranking Appointments and Wartime Service
From 1890 to 1903, Aračić commanded the Danube Divisional Region and served as honorary adjutant and military aide to King Alexander I Obrenović. He also taught military geography and history at the Military Academy. In 1902, he became chief of the Timok Divisional Region.
During the Balkan Wars, Aračić mobilized the Timok region and led Serbian troops in the battles of Planinica, Kula, and Belgradežik. He was promoted to major general on November 1, 1913.
Military Service in World War I
At the outbreak of World War I, Aračić commanded the 2nd Timok Division and 1st Šumadija Division. He participated in the Battle of Cer and the Battle of the Drina. In September 1914, he took command of the Užička Army, which fought in the Battle of Kolubara.
Aračić played a pivotal role in the defense of Serbia and its subsequent counteroffensive. However, he contracted typhoid fever from Austrian prisoners of war and passed away on February 12, 1915. He was initially buried in Užice but was later reinterred in Belgrade.
Legacy
Vukoman Aračić is remembered as a distinguished Serbian military leader who made significant contributions to his country's defense. He was posthumously awarded the Order of the Star of Karađorđe with Swords. His son, Petar, also became a general and played a key role in the "White Hand" movement.
