Early Life and Education
Xavier Bettel was born in Luxembourg on March 3, 1973, to a local wine merchant father and a French mother of Russian descent. After graduating high school, he pursued higher education, obtaining a master's degree in public and European law and a DEA in political science and public law from the University of Nancy II in France. He also studied maritime law and ecclesiastical law at Aristotle University of Thessaloniki in Greece.
Political Career
Municipal PoliticsBettel's political career began in 1989 when he joined the Democratic Party of Luxembourg. In 1999, he was elected to the Luxembourg City Council, ranking sixth on the Democratic Party's list. In 2001, he became an Alderman, responsible for social affairs. In 2011, at the age of 38, he was elected Mayor of Luxembourg City, assuming office in 2012.
National Politics
Bettel entered the Chamber of Deputies in 1999, but gained a seat only after other members resigned to join the government. He was re-elected in 2004 and 2009. In 2013, he became leader of the Democratic Party and led it to third place in the parliamentary elections. He was tasked with forming a ruling coalition and became Prime Minister of Luxembourg on December 4, 2013.
Policy Goals
Bettel has outlined several policy goals during his premiership, including legalizing same-sex marriage, replacing religious education in schools with secular ethics, and reducing government spending.
Personal Life
Bettel became the third world leader in history to openly identify as gay. His marriage to Belgian architect Gauthier Destenay in 2015 made him the first sitting head of government to marry a same-sex partner.
