Early Life and Family
Yair Shamir was born in Ramat Gan, Israel, in 1945. His father, Yitzhak Shamir, was a future Prime Minister of Israel, and his mother was a member of the Lehi underground. Shamir's father was exiled, and his mother was arrested when he was only one year old. The family was reunited in 1948.
Military Service
Shamir began his military service in the Israel Air Force in 1963, serving as a pilot, engineer, and commander. He retired as a colonel in 1988.
Business and Education
In 1974, while still in the army, Shamir earned a degree in electrical engineering from the Technion - Israel Institute of Technology. After leaving the military, he joined several technology companies and investment funds. From 1988 to 2005, he held senior positions at companies such as Scitex, El Al, and Elite Food Industries.
Civic Engagements and Politics
Beyond business, Shamir has served on the board of governors of the Technion and the board of trustees of Ben Gurion University. He is also the chairman of the board of directors of the Shalem Center. In January 2012, Shamir was appointed as chairman of the Israel National Roads Company, a voluntary position without salary.
In May 2012, Shamir was appointed as the second-highest-ranking member of the Yisrael Beiteinu party, then the third-largest party in the Israeli Knesset. He became the party's number two and was seen as a potential candidate for future elections.
Personal Life
Shamir is married to Ella, and they have three children and seven grandchildren.
