Yakov Matveyevich Yukharin
Early Life and Naval CareerBirth and Family:
Yakov Matveyevich Yukharin was born in 1802 as the younger brother of Admiral Pavel Matveyevich Yukharin. He entered the Naval Cadet Corps in 1814 and was promoted to midshipman in 1817 and to lieutenant in 1820.
Initial Service:
Yukharin's early career involved cruising in the Baltic Sea (1821), participating in an expedition to survey the White Sea (1823), and serving as a lieutenant in the Naval Corps (1827).
Crimean War Service
Promotion and Command:In 1844, Yukharin was promoted to captain of the 2nd rank for his distinguished service. He commanded a squadron of frigates and sailed with midshipmen in the Baltic Sea. In 1846, he was further promoted to captain of the 1st rank and transferred to the Black Sea Fleet, where he commanded the bombardment vessel "Perun" near the Abkhazian coast.
Defense of Nikolaev:
During the Crimean War, Yukharin was appointed commander of the 2nd Naval Training Crew and superintendent of the Nikolaev Naval School in 1847. He was awarded the Order of St. George (4th degree) for serving 25 years as an officer and the Order of St. Anna (2nd degree) the following year.
Command of Naval Forces:
In 1854, Yukharin commanded Battery No. 1, which protected Nikolaev from Anglo-French forces. He led a squadron of ships defending Nikolaev on the schooner "Opyt." In 1855, he commanded naval battalions and supervised all dressing stations near Nikolaev as a rear admiral.
Post-War Career
Retirement and Recognition:Yukharin retired from active service in 1857 and was awarded the Order of St. Stanislaus (1st degree) in 1861. In 1864, he was promoted to vice admiral and passed away in 1865.
