Early Life and Education
Yang Jiechi, born in Shanghai in May 1950, holds a profound command of the English language. In the early 1970s, he pursued advanced studies at the London School of Economics, part of China's efforts to rebuild its diplomatic corps after the disruptions of the Cultural Revolution.
Diplomatic Career Begins
In 1975, Yang commenced his diplomatic career at China's foreign ministry. He specialized in US affairs, serving for a total of 13 years in that capacity. He also led the Chinese mission to the United Nations, showcasing his diplomatic acumen.
Rise to High Office
Yang's diplomatic prowess was recognized in 1998 when he was appointed Vice Foreign Minister. From 2001 to 2005, he headed China's diplomatic mission in the United States. During his tenure, he played a pivotal role in fostering Sino-US cooperation in trade, collaborating on a diplomatic solution to the North Korean nuclear issue, and combating international terrorism.
Appointment as Foreign Minister
In April 2007, Yang Jiechi was officially appointed as China's Foreign Minister. His reputation as a staunch defender of China's national interests preceded him. He succeeded 66-year-old Li Zhaoxing, who retired from the post.
