Biography of Jan Machulski
Jan Machulski was a Polish film director and actor. He was born on July 3, 1928, in Lodz, Poland. Machulski graduated from the State Higher School of Film in Lodz in 1954 and the State Higher Theatre School in Warsaw in 1971.
Career
During his career, Machulski appeared in over 80 films and 70 theatrical productions in Lodz, Warsaw, Lublin, and Opole. Russian audiences may remember him as the safe-cracker Quinto in the comedies "Va-Bank" and "Va-Bank 2".
Machulski also successfully combined his career as a film director with his acting on stage. As a theatrical director, he staged several Shakespearean plays in Polish, including "A Midsummer Night's Dream," "Antigone," and "Hamlet." He was also a talented playwright, directing two of his own plays, "Fear" and "Dangerous Games."
Collaboration with Son
Machulski's son, Juliusz Machulski, also became a well-known film director, actor, producer, and screenwriter. Jan Machulski appeared in almost every film his son directed, starting with the first "Va-Bank" in 1981, followed by "Kingsize," "Deja vu," "Killer," and "Vinci."
Popular Roles
Jan Machulski was an extremely prolific actor, with over 70 theatrical and 80 film roles to his credit. One of his early films was the historical adventure film "The Saragossa Manuscript" in 1964, based on the novel by Jan Potocki. The film depicted the incredible and mysterious adventures of Captain Alfonse van Worden in 18th century Spain, as described in an old manuscript discovered by a young officer during the Napoleonic Wars.
Machulski was particularly beloved by audiences for his roles in the films "Eagle," "Women's Republic," "Va-Bank," "Va-Bank 2," "The Last Day of Summer," "Doll," and "Dogs." He also frequently appeared in television programs and plays specifically created for children, such as "Adventures of Mr. Samochodzik," "Journey for a Smile," and the film "Thief's Island."
Legacy and Honors
For many years, Jan Machulski served as the Dean of the Acting Department at the State Higher School of Film in Lodz. In recognition of his immense contribution to Polish cinema, he was awarded the Order of Merit of the Republic of Poland. Shortly before his death, he was made an honorary citizen of his hometown.
Jan Machulski passed away on November 20, 2008, in Warsaw, at the age of 80, due to a heart attack.
