Yao Defen: The Tallest Woman in the World

Birth and Early Years

Yao Defen, a Chinese woman from Shucheng, Liuan, Anhui, holds the Guinness World Record as the tallest living female. Born in 1972, Yao weighed 2.800 kg at birth, showing no signs of her future extraordinary height. However, by age three, she exhibited an insatiable appetite, consuming triple the amount of food as her peers, which triggered her rapid growth.

Adolescence and Medical Conditions

By age 11, Yao's height had reached an astonishing 188 cm, and by 15, it was 210 cm. Her condition, gigantism, caused by a pituitary gland tumor, became evident in her adolescence. Despite her height, Yao's athletic abilities proved inadequate for sports and she lacked proper education. By 1992, she was traveling with her father, showcasing herself.

Surgeries and Treatment

In 2006, Yao's tumor was successfully removed in Guangzhou Province, halting her excessive growth. However, the tumor recurred, necessitating another round of treatment in Shanghai in 2007. Despite medication, her growth resumed, and a repeat surgery was deemed necessary but was unaffordable.

International Recognition and Health Issues

In 2009, Yao's story gained global attention when she sustained a head injury. The subsequent media exposure led to donations for her medical care. However, despite the financial assistance, her health continued to deteriorate, as medications proved ineffective and she became too frail for surgery.

Last Days and Guinness World Record

Yao left the hospital in 2012 with a six-month supply of medication and the ability to walk on crutches. The official Guinness World Record measurement, taken with the help of British media, confirmed her height at 2.33 meters (7.8 feet).

Death and Legacy

Tragically, Yao passed away on November 13, 2012, at the age of 40, due to an undisclosed illness related to her gigantism. Her death was not widely reported until a month later. Yao Defen's extraordinary height and the challenges she faced as the tallest woman in the world serve as a poignant reminder of the complexities of human growth and medical conditions.
