Jaroslav Gzhebik: Czech Football Trailblazer in Russia
With the arrival of several foreign coaches to lead major Russian clubs, Czech native Jaroslav Gzhebik became the first international to make the move during the fall season. The former coach of Prague's Sparta spoke to Izvestiya correspondent Yuri Dud' about his aspirations and observations in this new chapter.
Impressions of Dynamo Moscow
"I would like to see Dynamo players demonstrate more assertiveness and intensity on the field," Gzhebik stated. "Speed and aggression are crucial in modern football, and these are areas where the team needs to improve. Despite recent disappointments, we aim to turn things around."
Reinforcement Evaluation
"We are currently in a week-long training camp, where I intend to meticulously assess each player and provide them with equal opportunities," Gzhebik explained. "Based on these observations, I will determine the necessary reinforcements. At present, I am only familiar with Buliikin's performance for the Russian national team."
Czech Interest in Russian Sports
"The Russian Premier League and hockey championships have gained significant popularity in the Czech Republic," Gzhebik remarked. "While initially focused on hockey, more Czechs have shifted their attention to football in recent years. Petržela's success with Zenit was widely celebrated."
Vladimir Vuitek's Influence
"Vladimir Vuitek's appointment as Lokomotiv Yaroslavl coach in 2001 was a watershed moment," Gzhebik acknowledged. "His subsequent achievements ignited interest among Czech athletes in the Russian sports landscape. Despite past tensions, Czechs now hold no animosity towards Russia, and our players are eager to pursue opportunities here."
Family Separation
"My family will not be joining me in Russia," Gzhebik said. "While I have always had their support in the Czech Republic, I understand that the distances involved will be challenging. The potential for success here, however, will compensate for the sacrifices."
Czech Footballing Success
"The Czech youth development system plays a vital role in nurturing talent," Gzhebik noted. "Furthermore, our central European location fosters close connections with foreign colleagues in both the east and west. Czech footballers are also highly adaptable and can showcase their skills in various countries. They possess a strong work ethic and continually strive for improvement."
Euro 2004 Prospects
"If the European Championship were held today, the Czechs would be among the favorites," Gzhebik opined. "However, there is still time for surprises, including potential injuries. Our squad lacks depth, with a limited number of reliable players beyond the starting lineup."
Pavel Nedvěd's Chances
"Nedvěd's professionalism is exceptional," Gzhebik stated. "His relentless drive and determination give him a strong chance of winning the prestigious Ballon d'Or. His success would be a source of immense pride for all of us in the Czech Republic."
Foreign Players in Czech and Russian Leagues
"While a large number of foreign players can hinder domestic football development, it depends on their quality," Gzhebik explained. "Not all imports are second-rate. The Czech league imposes a limit of four foreigners on the field, while Russia plans to introduce a similar policy. Such measures can be beneficial, and clubs must prepare accordingly."
