Yaşar Büyükanıt: General, Diplomat, and Statesman
Yaşar Büyükanıt, the 25th Chief of General Staff of the Turkish Armed Forces, served from 2006 to 2008. Born on September 1, 1940, he was of Azerbaijani descent and hailed from a family that emigrated to Turkey from the Amasya region of Armenia in the early 20th century.
Military Career
Büyükanıt rose through the ranks of the Turkish military, holding significant positions including Chief of the Intelligence Department and General Secretary of the General Staff from 1992 onward. In 2000, he was promoted to the rank of General and became Commander of the Land Forces. He served extensively in southeastern Anatolia, a region plagued by Kurdish separatism.
Stance on Separatism and Islamism
Büyükanıt became renowned for his hardline stance against both Kurdish separatists and radical Islamists. In 2007, amid concerns that an Islamist candidate (Recep Tayyip Erdoğan or Abdullah Gül) could become President of Turkey, Büyükanıt issued a warning that the military might intervene to uphold the secular nature of the state.
