Biography of Jens Stoltenberg
Jens Stoltenberg, born on March 16, 1959, in Oslo, is a Norwegian politician who currently serves as the Secretary General of NATO since October 1, 2014.
Early Life and Education
Stoltenberg completed his studies at the University of Oslo, graduating from the Economics Faculty in 1987.
Political Career
Stoltenberg is a member of the Norwegian Labour Party (Arbeiderpartiet) and has been actively involved in politics since the early 1980s. He became a member of the central board of the party in 1985.
In 1992, Stoltenberg was appointed as the Deputy Leader of the Norwegian Labour Party. He has been elected multiple times to the Norwegian Parliament, known as the Storting, since 1993. During his time in the parliament, he served on various committees, including the Committee on Social Affairs from 1991 to 1993 and the Committee on Fuel and Energy Policy from 1997 to 2000.
Stoltenberg held several ministerial positions in Norwegian governments. In the government of Gro Harlem Brundtland, he served as the State Secretary of the Department of Environmental Protection from 1990 to 1991 and as the Minister of Energy from 1993 to 1996. In the government of Thorbjørn Jagland, he served as the Minister of Finance from 1996 to 1997.
Prime Minister of Norway
On March 17, 2000, Stoltenberg assumed the role of Prime Minister of Norway. He led the country through two separate terms, from 2000 to 2001 and from 2005 to 2013. As Prime Minister, he focused on issues such as environmental sustainability, education, and social welfare.
Secretary General of NATO
In October 2014, Stoltenberg took on the role of Secretary General of NATO, becoming the first Norwegian to hold this position. As Secretary General, he has been involved in addressing various global security challenges, including the conflict in Ukraine and counterterrorism efforts.
