Early Life and Education

Yoshihide Suga was born in the town of Ogachi (now the city of Yuza) in Akita Prefecture, Japan. He earned a bachelor's degree from Hosei University in Tokyo.

Political Career

After working as a parliamentary assistant for eleven years, Suga joined the Ministry of International Trade and Industry in 1984. He then served on the Yokohama City Council. In 1996, he was elected to the House of Representatives for the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP).

Cabinet Positions

- Minister of Internal Affairs and Communications (2006-2007) in the first cabinet of Shinzo Abe

Controversial Remarks

In 2016, Suga commented on the marriage of popular singer Masaharu Fukuyama and actress Kaori Fukiishi, saying, "I hope this marriage encourages mothers to have children. Please bear many children." His remarks were criticized by feminists as sexist and by left-wing opponents as similar to rhetoric used by Japanese militarists urging women to bear more future soldiers.

Response to Criticism

Suga defended his comments, stating that while individuals are free to choose whether to marry or have children, the government should create a society that supports marriage and child-rearing.
