British Diplomat with a Distinguished Career

Sir Donald Maitland, GCMG, KCVO, KCMG, KCVO, a highly accomplished British diplomat, left an indelible mark on the international stage.

Early Life and Education

Born into a diplomatic family, Maitland attended Latymer Upper School and University College London. His academic pursuits took him to the University of Bonn shortly before the outbreak of World War II.

Military Service and Foreign Office Debut

During the war, Maitland served with distinction in both the infantry and the airborne forces, earning recognition for his bravery. Following his demobilization in 1948, he joined the Foreign Office and served in various roles in Germany until 1951.

Embassy Assignments

Maitland's diplomatic assignments spanned several continents. He held positions at the British Embassy in Ethiopia (1954-1957), the Foreign Office's Western Europe Department (1958-1962), and the British Embassy in Washington, D.C. (1963-1968). In the latter role, he served as Counselor and Head of Chancery.

Senior Foreign Office Positions

Maitland continued to rise through the ranks of the Foreign Office, holding the post of Assistant Under-Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs (1968-1971). His influence extended to the highest levels as Ambassador to the USSR (1971-1973) and Deputy Permanent Under-Secretary of State.

NATO and Italian Crisis

From 1975 to 1979, Maitland served as the United Kingdom's Permanent Representative to NATO in Brussels. During this period, he expressed concern over the potential involvement of communists in the Italian government, fearing its impact on the alliance's security.

Knighthoods and Family

Maitland received several knighthoods in recognition of his exceptional service. He was knighted Commander of the Royal Victorian Order (1966), Knight Commander of the Order of St. Michael and St. George (1971), and Knight Grand Cross of the Order of St. Michael and St. George (1979).

Maitland married twice. His first marriage, to Lynette du Preez, lasted until her passing in 1984. In 1986, he married Irene Easton, who predeceased him in 1995.
