Early Life and Education
Youssef Kerkour was born under the Gemini zodiac sign on June 9, 1978, in Rabat, Morocco. Born to an English mother and Moroccan father, his family was intellectual but unrelated to the arts. Despite this, Kerkour loved singing and dancing from a young age.
Inspired by Bruce Lee's "Enter the Dragon," Kerkour's interest in acting was further ignited by a visit to Shakespeare's birthplace, Stratford-upon-Avon. He enrolled in Bard College in the United States, majoring in psychology but dedicating his free time to acting and choreography.
Acting Career
Kerkour's theatrical debut was in a 2001 production of Steve Martin's "Picasso at the Lapin Agile." Visa issues forced him to return to the United Kingdom, where he trained at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art, and joined the Royal Shakespeare Company.
His distinctive appearance and fluency in Arabic cast Kerkour into a consistent role as terrorists, criminals, and bandits. He made his acting debut in the British drama series "Holby City." Subsequent roles included the medical drama "Doctors" and the miniseries "The Road to 9/11."
Breakthrough Role
In 2012, Kerkour broke the cycle of negative roles by playing a police officer in the dramatic thriller "Kaleidoscope Love." He also portrayed Baron Willoughby in "Richard II" with David Tennant and played an antagonist in the crime comedy "London Boulevard" with Owen Wilson and Woody Harrelson.
His career ignited with his performance in the comedy-drama series "Home," which premiered in 2019. Kerkour's portrayal of Sami Ibrahim, a Syrian refugee, earned him a nomination for a prestigious BAFTA award.
Recent Projects
Since his breakthrough, Kerkour has received more invitations to film. He had major roles in "Baghdad Central" and the fantasy "Cursed." In the horror-drama series "Dracula," based on Bram Stoker's novel, he played Olgaren alongside Claes Bang.
Personal Life
Unlike many of his colleagues, Kerkour keeps his personal life private. His Instagram account primarily contains work-related photos. However, it is known that he is happily married and has a daughter.
Current Projects
Kerkour remains active in film and television. He participated in Ridley Scott's "House of Gucci" in 2021. He also provided the voice of a character in the animated film "Ron's Gone Wrong." Most recently, he appeared in the Netflix miniseries "Stay Close."
