Early Life and Gymnastics Career
Yulia Mikhailova was a promising gymnast who achieved the title of master of sport at just 18 years of age. She was a student at the Lesgaft Institute of Physical Culture and pursued her passion for dance and trampolining. As a young bride, she was filled with hope and joy.
Tragedy Strikes
On a fateful day in March 1990, Yulia suffered a horrific accident during a training session. A miscalculated somersault left her paralyzed from the neck down. Instead of heartbreak, she exhibited remarkable calmness and immediately called for help.
Medical Challenges and Personal Resilience
Yulia's injury led to a lengthy stay in the hospital, where she endured various complications including pneumonia and kidney problems. Despite the severity of her condition, she remained determined and found solace in imaginary exercises that kept her muscles active.
German Treatment and a New Beginning
With the support of her husband, Roman, Yulia sought treatment in Germany. Thanks to the kindness of Fraue Eva-Maria Schliman, who donated her daughter's wheelchair to Yulia, she was able to embark on a three-month recovery journey. The treatment and rehabilitation significantly improved her mobility.
Relationship Turmoil and a New Chapter
Upon her return, Yulia faced an unexpected blow: Roman had left without explanation. Disheartened but not defeated, she met Pasha, a fellow wheelchair user and Afghan War veteran. Together, they found solace in their shared experiences and spent two years in a loving relationship.
Academic and Professional Success
In 1995, Yulia graduated from the institute with the support of her understanding professors. Despite her love for coaching, she pursued an academic path and went on to complete her doctoral dissertation on the topic of motor rehabilitation after trauma.
Vision for Rehabilitation
Inspired by her own experiences, Yulia dreams of establishing a comprehensive rehabilitation center that combines physical restoration with mental health support. She believes that early psychological intervention is crucial for successful recovery.
Current Life and Future Aspirations
Today, Yulia is a successful manager in a company that specializes in rehabilitation equipment. She also teaches therapeutic physical education and is writing a book to empower patients and their families. Despite further personal challenges, including the recent end of her relationship with Sasha, she remains resilient and continues to strive for improvement. With her unwavering determination and the support of her loved ones, Yulia continues to inspire others and advocates for improved rehabilitation services.
