Early Life and Education
Yunus Bakhshali oglu Safarov was born on May 15, 1926, in the village of Khanlyglar, Nakhchivan, Azerbaijan. After completing secondary school and the Nakhchivan Agricultural College in 1945, he enrolled at the Azerbaijan Agricultural Institute in Ganja.
Academic Career
In 1950, Safarov graduated with honors from the Azerbaijan Agricultural Institute and became a postgraduate student in microbiology at the All-Union Experimental Veterinary Institute in Moscow. In 1954, he defended his doctoral dissertation and earned the degree of Candidate of Biological Sciences. Upon returning to Azerbaijan, he was appointed first assistant and later associate professor in the Department of Epizootology and Microbiology at Azerbaijan State Agrarian University. In 1963, he defended his doctoral dissertation in veterinary medicine and became a professor shortly thereafter.
Safarov dedicated over 24 years (1953-1977) to the Azerbaijan Agricultural Institute and 17 years (1977-1994) to Nakhchivan University. He held various positions, including Secretary of the Party Organization (1960-1964), Dean of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine (1964-1971), and Head of the Department of Microbiology, Epizootology, and Virology (1971-1977) at the Azerbaijan Agricultural Institute. At Nakhchivan University, he served as Head of the Department of Zoology and organized the Faculty of Natural History and Agriculture.
Research and Contributions
Safarov's research focused on the role of associated microorganisms in diseases of sheep and developed complex vaccination methods for various infectious diseases in sheep. His work was novel and multifaceted, earning him several copyrights. He contributed significantly to the training of zoo- and veterinary professionals and scientific educators, many of whom continue to work in Azerbaijan and other CIS countries.
His textbooks ("Epizootology," "Microbiology," "Virology," "Special Epizootology") and teaching aids remain valuable resources for veterinary and biological students and researchers. Safarov's scientific publications appeared in reputable journals and collections such as "Doklady VASKhNIL," "Veterinaria," and "Scientific News of Agriculture."
Accolades and Legacy
Safarov was the first Azerbaijani to defend a doctoral dissertation in veterinary microbiology. He supervised the preparation of 10 Candidates of Science and 2 Doctors of Science. He also acted as the official opponent for 5 doctoral and 18 candidate dissertations.
In recognition of his contributions, Safarov received the Order of the Badge of Honor, medals, and a Certificate of Honor from the Supreme Council of the Azerbaijan SSR. In 2006, an auditorium at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and Pharmacology at Azerbaijan State Agrarian University was named after him, and a stand was unveiled in the university's museum to commemorate his scientific and pedagogical activities.
Safarov passed away on March 27, 1994, in Nakhchivan. His legacy continues to inspire generations of researchers and students in the field of veterinary medicine in Azerbaijan and beyond.
