Yuriy Benyo: Ukrainian Footballer and Coach
Yuriy Benyo, a renowned Ukrainian football player and coach, began his journey in the sport under the guidance of Georhiy Syrbu and Anatoliy Kroshchenko. After graduating from the Lviv Medical Institute, he embarked on his playing career with various amateur teams in Lviv.
Professional Career
Benyo's professional debut came with "Garay" Zhovkva in the Ukrainian Second League during the 1994/95 and 1995/96 seasons. He later joined Lviv's "Karpaty" under the leadership of Myron Markevych, where he helped the club secure bronze in the 1997/98 season. His exceptional skills earned him a transfer to FC Shakhtar Donetsk, but his time there was short-lived. He subsequently became captain of FC Metalurh Zaporizhzhya.
In 2005, Benyo joined Latvian club "Venta" as head coach, tasked with leading them to the championship and a spot in the Champions League. He brought along Polish goalkeeper Maciej Nalepka and defender Yuriy Binyuk, but the club declared bankruptcy shortly after. Benyo returned to Lviv and maintained his fitness with the amateur team "Pustomyty" in the Lviv Regional Championship.
Later Playing Career and Transition to Coaching
With the start of the 2005/06 Ukrainian championship, Benyo received offers from FC Metalurh Zaporizhzhya and FC Arsenal Kyiv. He opted for Arsenal Kyiv, where he became a key player and captain, wearing the number 7 jersey. In 2008, he accepted a coaching role with FC Lviv, becoming their head coach in 2009. However, he resigned after a loss to FC Poltava in the Ukrainian Cup.
In 2017, Benyo became an assistant coach to Igor Jovicevic at Slovenian club "Celje," while simultaneously working with the Ukraine national under-19 team.
