Yuri Nikolaevich Bogdanovich: Russian Revolutionary and Narodnik
Yuri Nikolaevich Bogdanovich was a prominent Russian revolutionary and member of the Narodnaya Volya (People's Will) movement.
Early Life and Education
Bogdanovich was born into a noble family and initially served as a land surveyor in the Pskov province. In 1871, he enrolled in the St. Petersburg Medico-Surgical Academy. However, he left the academy in 1873 and joined the revolutionary movement.
Narodnik Activity
Along with Vera Figner, Bogdanovich conducted propaganda campaigns among peasants in the Saratov province. In 1876, he joined the separatist group within the Zemlya i Volya (Land and Freedom) organization.
Involvement in Narodnaya Volya
After the split of Zemlya i Volya, Bogdanovich joined Narodnaya Volya in 1879. He became a member of its Executive Committee and played a key role in the assassination of Tsar Alexander II in 1881.
Red Cross Involvement
After the assassination, Bogdanovich actively restored Narodnaya Volya's operations. He worked in the organization's Red Cross, providing support to imprisoned revolutionaries and planning escapes.
Arrest and Trial
In 1882, Bogdanovich was arrested in Moscow. He faced charges of involvement in Narodnaya Volya, planning terrorist attacks, and establishing a dynamite workshop. Sentenced to death in 1883, his sentence was commuted to life imprisonment.
Imprisonment and Death
Bogdanovich served his sentence in the Schlisselburg Fortress, where he contracted tuberculosis. He died within the fortress walls in 1883.
