Early Life and Military Service

Yuri Kayurov was born on September 30, 1927, in Cherepovets, Russia. His father, Ivan, fought in the Great Patriotic War and died in 1941. After completing only six years of secondary school, Kayurov enrolled in a trade school and worked as a mechanic at the Vulkan plant in Leningrad.

In 1944, he joined the Pre-Military Naval Aviation School in Kuibyshev but failed to see combat. Instead, he served on the legendary cruiser Aurora and, dissatisfied with his role as a gunner, sought opportunities to participate in drama. Inspired by actors Vasily Merkuryev and Irina Meyerhold, he discovered his passion for acting.

Theatrical Career

After demobilization in 1949, Kayurov enrolled in the Leningrad Theater Institute. He graduated in 1952 and joined the Saratov Drama Theater, where he spent 15 years and attributed his development to director Nikolai Bondarev.

Film Debut as Lenin

Kayurov's film debut came in 1961, when he was cast as Vladimir Lenin in Anatoly Rybakov's "At the Beginning of the Century." His casting was a peculiar twist of fate, as another actor was initially chosen but dropped out. Kayurov's uncanny resemblance to Lenin caught the attention of Mosfilm director Ivan Pyryev, who approved him for the role.

Lenin's Cinematic Embodiment

Kayurov went on to portray Lenin in 17 films over a span of 20 years. His performances in the television series "Our Biography" (1973) and the film "Lenin in Paris" (1983) earned him two USSR State Prizes.

Stage Presence

Beyond his cinematic Lenin, Kayurov also played the revolutionary leader in several stage productions, including "John Reed" at the Maly Theater and "Russians" and "The Murder of Gonzaga."

Later Life and Legacy

Today, at the age of 91, Kayurov continues to serve with the Maly Theater. He was married to Valentina Kaierova, who worked in the theater's medical unit. She passed away in 2005.

Their son, Leonid Kayurov, became an actor and played Lenin in the television play "The Path" (1986). He later became a deacon in the Russian Orthodox Church.
