Early Life and Military Service
Yuriy Pomerantsev was born into a family of a coal industry executive in Karaganda, Kazakhstan. His father's arrest and execution in 1938 forced the family to relocate to Moscow.
In 1941, Pomerantsev was drafted into the Red Army and received basic combat training in Kazan. He participated in the Great Patriotic War as part of the 269th Separate Ski Battalion in the Demyansk Operation. He was severely wounded in action on March 11, 1942, and spent several months in a hospital in Gorky (now Nizhny Novgorod).
Acting Career
After the war, Pomerantsev moved to Almaty, where his mother had evacuated during the conflict. Despite lacking formal training, he began his acting career there.
From 1943 to 1945, he sang in the choir of the Abay Kazakh State Academic Opera and Ballet Theater. He then worked as an actor at the Theater for Children and Youth of Kazakhstan (1945-1953) and the Saratov Theater of Young Spectators (1953-1954).
In 1954, Pomerantsev joined the Alma-Ata Russian Drama Theater. He became known for his transformative performances and memorable characterizations.
Film and Other Work
Pomerantsev gained fame in cinematic roles as Dr. Lavrov and the traitorous General Vlasov. He also collaborated extensively with Kazakh radio and television.
Civic Involvement and Legacy
Pomerantsev served as Chairman of the Republican Commission for Cultural and Sponsorship Work in the countryside and led a drama studio at his theater. He was also elected as a deputy to the Supreme Council of the Kazakh SSR.
Yuriy Pomerantsev passed away on March 23, 2022, leaving behind a legacy as a distinguished actor, veteran, and community leader.
