Yuri A. Zakharov: Distinguished Russian Chemist and Educator
Yuri Alekseevich Zakharov, a renowned Russian chemist, was born on March 30, 1938, in Kemerovo, Siberia.
Academic and Professional Achievements
Zakharov graduated from Tomsk State University in 1960 and embarked on a distinguished academic career at Tomsk Polytechnic University (TPU). As a professor and head of the Department of Radiation Chemistry, he made significant contributions to the field. In 1975, he received his doctorate in chemistry.
In 1978, Zakharov was appointed Rector of Kemerovo State University (KSU), a position he held for 27 consecutive years. Under his leadership, KSU became a leading institution in the region. Zakharov supervised 16 doctoral and 39 master's dissertations, fostering the careers of numerous students.
In 1991, Zakharov was elected a Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS) for his contributions to chemistry.
Scientific Research
Zakharov's scientific research focused on the physical chemistry of energetic solid materials. His studies on chemical reactions in explosives led to the development of novel materials with applications in the defense industry and space exploration.
He established the scientific school "Energetic and Nanosized Materials" and actively promoted interdisciplinary research in chemistry, materials science, and physics.
Political Involvement and Controversy
Zakharov was a member of the "Unity" party (later known as "United Russia") from 2000 onwards. In 2005, he resigned as Rector of KSU due to criminal charges brought against him and his family. The charges related to alleged abuse of office and forgery.

Legacy
Yuri A. Zakharov passed away on July 23, 2024, at the age of 86. He is remembered as an eminent chemist, distinguished educator, and a dedicated mentor who left a lasting legacy in the field of physical chemistry and chemical engineering.
