Early Life and Education
Yury I. Gallinger was born on September 3, 1939, to German parents of Volga ethnicity. He entered the Karaganda Medical Institute in 1956 and graduated from the Chisinau Medical Institute in 1962 with a specialization in endoscopic surgery.
Career
Early Surgical ExperienceAfter graduating, Gallinger worked as a surgeon in a Moscow polyclinic (1962-1964) and the thoracic department of Moscow City Hospital No. 59 (1964-1967).
Moscow Medical University
Gallinger joined Moscow Medical University in 1967, where he held various positions from junior research scientist to senior research scientist in the Department of Surgery. His scientific mentors during this period were Professor V.S. Mayat and Professor Yu.M. Pantyrev.
National Center for Surgery
Since 1986, Gallinger has led the Department of Endoscopic Surgery at the Scientific Center for Surgery of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences, headed by Academician B.V. Petrovsky and Academician B.A. Konstantinov.
Endoscopic Surgery Pioneer
Gallinger played a pivotal role in the development and implementation of endoscopic interventions for gastric polyps, gastrointestinal bleeding, esophageal stenosis, and biliary tract disorders. In January 1991, he performed the first laparoscopic cholecystectomy in the USSR. He also organized training courses for surgeons in operative endoscopy and conducted the first laparoscopic operations in numerous cities across Russia and the former Soviet Union.

He enjoys reading detective literature and watching detective films, particularly "The White Sun of the Desert." Gallinger is an adherent of the Orthodox Christian faith.
