Early LifeYvonne Howell was born Julia Rose Shevlin on July 31, 1905, in Chicago, Illinois. Her mother, Alice Howell, was a vaudeville and silent film actress, and her stepfather, Richard Smith, was a vaudeville performer. In 1915, Alice relocated the family to Los Angeles, where Richard became a director.
Film Career
Yvonne made her acting debut in 1924's short comedy "Harem Follies." She appeared in six silent films in total, including "Fashions for Women" (1927), "Somewhere in Sonora" (1927), "Great Mail Robbery" (1927), and "Take Me Home" (1928). Despite her family's involvement in the industry, she failed to achieve significant roles. Her last screen appearance was a small, non-speaking part in the sound film "Working Girls" (1931).
Marriage and Family
In 1930, Yvonne married cinematographer George Stevens, who would later become an Oscar-winning director. Their son, George Stevens Jr., was born in April 1932. Yvonne dedicated herself to raising their child while Stevens worked for Hal Roach. The couple divorced in 1947.
Post-Acting Career
After her film career ended, Yvonne became a nurse's aide in military hospitals during World War II. She continued her work as a volunteer in teaching after the war.
Legacy
Yvonne Howell passed away on May 27, 2010, at the age of 104. She is survived by her son, three grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren.
