Childhood

Zekharya Abramovich was born into a large and financially struggling family in the village of Lany. His father, Samuel, leased land from a Polish landowner. Despite the hardships, Zekharya's parents recognized his academic potential and sent him to a traditional religious school in Halicz.

Early Education

Under the guidance of his first teacher, Rabbi Simcha Leonovich, Zekharya excelled in his studies. When he became proficient in reading prayers in Hebrew, he was enrolled in a secular school in the city. However, the family faced financial difficulties and moved to the village of Zalukva near Halicz.

Academic Ambitions

After completing four years of primary education, Zekharya's parents intended to bring him back home. However, his teachers convinced them to allow him to pursue further education at a gymnasium in Stanislawów. This decision was opposed by Rabbi Leonovich, who believed Zekharya should become a priest and offered to tutor him himself.

Gymnasium and Expulsion

Zekharya's intelligence and abilities blossomed in gymnasium. However, he was expelled several years later, reportedly for his involvement in an illegal circle. His father then apprenticed him to a shoemaker in the village of Knyahynyn.

Literary Beginnings

Around this time, Zekharya began writing poetry in Polish. After returning to Stanislawów to continue his studies, he actively participated in the local Karaite youth scene. This period proved highly productive for the young poet, who wrote most of his works in his native Karaite language.

Mentorship and Recognition

The prominent Polish Turkologist Jan Grzegorzewski recognized Zekharya's talent and published some of his poems. Zekharya's popularity continued to grow, and his works were eventually published in the journal "Karay Avazy" three decades after his passing.

Military Service and Demise

Zekharya was conscripted into the Austrian army, where he continued to write poetry. He penned his last known poem in Ukrainian while serving in the Czech lands. He returned from military service ill with tuberculosis. Despite his suffering, he failed to find a cure, passing away on May 5, 1903, in Zalukva along the Limnica River. Zekharya never married or had children.
