Biography of Zbigniew Preisner
Zbigniew Preisner is a renowned Polish composer known for his work in the film industry. He studied history and philosophy in Krakow, Poland and never received formal music education. Instead, Preisner learned by listening to recordings and transcribing musical parts.
Famous Film Composer
Preisner gained recognition for his compositions for the films of Krzysztof Kieslowski. In some of these films, Preisner's music is attributed to a fictional Dutch composer named Van den Budenmayer. Similarly, in the film "Three Colors: Blue," Preisner's song "Song for the Unification of Europe" is intended to be composed by one of the characters. After collaborating with Polish actress Agnieszka Holland in Kieslowski's "Three Colors" trilogy, Francis Ford Coppola, the producer of Holland's film "The Secret Garden," asked Preisner to compose the music for the movie.
Recognition and Awards
Although Preisner is often associated with Kieslowski, he has also composed music for other directors. He received a César Award for his work in Jean Becker's film "Elisa" and has won several other awards, including the César Award in 1994 for "Three Colors: Red" and the Silver Bear at the Berlin International Film Festival in 1997 for "A Little Piece of Heaven." In 1988, Preisner wrote his first major work, "Requiem for My Friend," which was not intended for film. Originally, it was planned for Kieslowski to direct the screenplay written by Krzysztof Piesiewicz, but after Kieslowski's death, the composition became a kind of tribute to him.
Other Works
Preisner composed music for the documentary series "People's Century," a collaboration between the British television company BBC and the American television company PBS. He also wrote the music for Thomas Vinterberg's film "It's All About Love" in 2003. Preisner's style can be described as romantic, with noticeable influences from Jean Sibelius.
