Zdravko Zdravkov, a renowned Bulgarian goalkeeper and coach, left an indelible mark on the national team and in club football.
Early Career and Club Success
Born in Sofia, Zdravkov began his professional career with local giants Levski Sofia in 1989. He spent six seasons with the club, establishing himself as a talented shot-stopper.
In 1997, Zdravkov embarked on an international journey, joining Turkish club Istanbulspor. After brief stints with Adanaspor and Cherno More, he returned to Istanbulspor, where he spent three more seasons.
International Recognition
Zdravkov made his international debut for Bulgaria in 1993. He captained the team in 15 significant matches, including two European Championships (1996, 2004) and the 1998 FIFA World Cup.
1998 FIFA World Cup
At the 1998 World Cup, Zdravkov emerged as one of the tournament's top goalkeepers after impressive performances in the opening matches. However, a disappointing defeat to Spain and conceding six goals in the process tarnished his reputation.
Later Career and Retirement
After a short stint with Arsenal in 2002, Zdravkov returned to Bulgaria. He joined Litex Lovech before moving to Turkish side Çaykur Rizespor, where he spent his final years.
2004 European Championship
At Euro 2004, Zdravkov showcased his experience but struggled against top-quality opposition from Sweden, Denmark, and Italy. Bulgaria's disappointing performance resulted in Zdravkov's retirement from the national squad.
Post-Retirement and Legacy
Zdravkov retired from professional football in 2007 but made a brief comeback in 2009 with Slavia Sofia. However, heart problems forced him to retire once again.
With 70 caps for Bulgaria, Zdravkov was a pivotal figure in the national team. His contributions to Bulgarian football, both on the pitch and as a coach, will forever be etched in the annals of the nation's sporting history.
