Zemgus Girgensons: Latvian Hockey Phenom
Early Life and CareerZemgus Girgensons, fondly known as the "Latvian Locomotive," embarked on his hockey journey at EVHS hockey school under coach Edmnds Vasiļjevs. After honing his skills in Latvia's minor and junior leagues, he ventured to North America in 2009, playing for the Green Mountain Glades in the EJHL. The following season, he joined the Dubuque Fighting Saints of the USHL, leading them to the 2011 championship and earning a spot in the USHL All-Star Game.
NHL Draft and Buffalo Sabres
In 2012, Girgensons was a highly touted prospect and the Buffalo Sabres selected him with the 14th overall pick in the first round of the NHL draft. Despite a slow start to his AHL career with the Rochester Americans, he finished the season strongly and transitioned to the Sabres for the 2013-14 season. He made an immediate impact, scoring his first NHL goal against Jimmy Howard of the Detroit Red Wings.
All-Star Status and Contract Renewals
Girgensons' popularity soared in 2015 when he was voted as a fan favorite for the All-Star Game. Throughout his tenure with the Sabres, he has signed several contract extensions, including a one-year deal in 2016, a two-year contract in 2017, and a three-year extension in 2020.
Season-Ending Injury
Unfortunately, Girgensons' 2020-21 season was cut short due to a lower-body injury sustained during training camp. Despite surgery, the injury kept him out for the entire season.
International Career
Girgensons has represented Latvia at various international tournaments, including the 2012 World Junior Championship and the 2014 Winter Olympics. He made his senior national team debut at the 2013 World Championship, scoring his first international goal against Slovakia.
Personal Life
Girgensons comes from a hockey family; his father, Aldis Girgensons, played defense for Riga Dinamo. Currently, his father is the general manager of the East Hokkaido Cranes in the Asian Hockey League. Girgensons is happily married with two children.
