Zenon Grocholewski: Cardinal and Vatican Official
Early Life and EducationZenon Grocholewski was born in Brodaki, Poland, on October 11, 1939. He studied philosophy and theology at the Archdiocesan Seminary in Poznan before pursuing a doctorate in canon law at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome. Grocholewski also attended language courses in Germany and France, becoming fluent in Italian and English.
Ordination and Priestly Ministry
On March 18, 1961, Grocholewski was ordained a subdeacon, and on May 27, 1962, a deacon. On May 27, 1963, he was ordained a priest for the Archdiocese of Poznan. He served as a parish priest for three years before returning to Rome to complete his doctoral studies.
Vatican Curia Career
Grocholewski began working at the Supreme Tribunal of the Apostolic Signatura in 1972. He held various positions there, including notary, chancellor, secretary, and prefect. In 1982, Pope John Paul II appointed him titular bishop of Agropoli. He was elevated to archbishop in 1991.
Bishop and Cardinal
Grocholewski served as prefect of the Supreme Tribunal of the Apostolic Signatura and president of the Court of Cassation of Vatican City from 1998 to 1999. In 1999, he was appointed prefect of the Congregation for Catholic Education and grand chancellor of the Pontifical Gregorian University. Pope John Paul II created him a cardinal deacon in 2001, with the title of San Nicola in Carcere.
Canon Law Expertise and Influence
Grocholewski was a renowned expert in canon law. He was a member of the commission that studied the draft of the Code of Canon Law of 1983. He also taught canon law at Gregorian and Lateran Universities and was a member of the ecclesiastical court community.
Other Roles and Membership
Cardinal Grocholewski served as a member of several Vatican dicasteries, including the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith and the Congregation for Bishops. He was also a member of the Pontifical Council for the Interpretation of Legislative Texts and the Special Council for Oceania of the General Secretariat of the Synod of Bishops.
Later Years
Cardinal Grocholewski was a cardinal elector in the papal conclave of 2005 that elected Pope Benedict XVI. He continued to serve the Church in various capacities until his death in 2020.
