Early Life and Education
Jorge Fernando Branco de Sampaio was born in Lisbon, Portugal, on September 18, 1939, to a well-respected Jewish family. His father was a physician and his mother an English teacher. Sampaio initially pursued music before completing a law degree from the University of Lisbon in 1961.
Anti-Dictatorship Activism
During his university years, Sampaio led a student organization that staunchly opposed the authoritarian regime of António de Oliveira Salazar. This activism ignited his passion for democracy and human rights.
Political Career
After the fall of the dictatorship in 1974, Sampaio joined the Socialist Party. He was elected to Parliament in 1979 and went on to hold various influential positions, including Mayor of Lisbon, member of the European Commission on Human Rights, and co-chair of the Socialist International's Africa Committee.
Presidency of Portugal (1996-2006)
In 1996, Sampaio was elected President of Portugal. His two terms focused on fostering social justice, improving education and healthcare, and promoting Portugal's international image.
United Nations High Representative
Following his presidency, Sampaio was appointed High Representative of the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations in 2006. This role involved promoting dialogue and understanding between different cultures and civilizations. Sampaio believed that the resolution of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict was a key priority, along with combating terrorism.
High Representative for Tuberculosis
In May 2021, Sampaio was appointed the first United Nations High Representative for Tuberculosis. This role tasked him with spearheading efforts to combat the spread of tuberculosis worldwide.
Personal Life
Sampaio is married and has two children, Vera and André. He is a passionate advocate for music and art.
