Early Life and Musical Roots
Zhu, an American electronic music producer and vocalist, was born in the San Francisco Bay Area to Chinese parents. Growing up, he developed a passion for music, playing in jazz bands and orchestras in high school. He later pursued musical studies at the University of Southern California.
The Creative Enigma
Zhu burst onto the music scene in early 2014 with his breakthrough track "Moves Like Ms Jackson," an anonymous mashup of Outkast songs that garnered widespread praise. Maintaining an aura of mystery, he released several more tracks on SoundCloud, culminating in the EP "The Nightday" in April 2014.
Commercial Success and Grammy Nomination
The lead single from "The Nightday," "Faded," received widespread support from influential figures like Pete Tong. It soared up global charts, reaching the top three in Australia and the UK and earning a Grammy nomination for Best Dance Recording.
Balancing Music and Identity
Zhu's anonymity initially stemmed from an awareness of societal biases and a desire to let his music speak for itself. He prioritized artistic integrity and fan engagement over personal recognition.
Apparel and Collaboration
Beyond music, Zhu launched his own clothing line, Nightday Collection, in 2015. Notably, he released a collaborative EP titled "Genesis Series," featuring collaborations with Skrillex, AlunaGeorge, and A-Trak.
Debut Album and Coachella Performance
In 2016, Zhu unveiled his debut album "Generationwhy." The album's title track and lead single premiered at Coachella, earning high praise and comparisons to the legendary Daft Punk.
Continued Success and International Recognition
Zhu's success continued with a headlining performance at Ultra Music Festival in 2017. He released several singles, including "Nightcrawler" and "Intoxicate," and contributed remixes for popular artists like Gorillaz and Migos.
Second Album and Global Tour
In 2018, Zhu released his sophomore album "Ringos Desert." The album featured collaborations with Tame Impala, Majid Jordan, and TOKiMONSTA and was accompanied by a North American tour.
Recent Collaborations and Political Involvement
Zhu has continued to release new music and collaborate with artists like Ty Dolla Sign, collaborating with the latter on the 2020 single "ONLY." Notably, his music video for "Came For The Low" featured 2020 US presidential candidate Andrew Yang.
