Biography of Zhu Rongji
Zhu Rongji, born in the city of Changsha in Hunan province, was a prominent political figure in the Chinese government. He was a member of the Communist Party of China and held various positions in the government throughout his career.
Early Life and Education
Zhu Rongji graduated from Tsinghua University in Beijing in 1951, with a major in electrical engineering. After graduation, he worked as a deputy head of the production planning department in the Ministry of Industry in Northeast China. During this time, he also became a member of the Communist Party of China in October 1949.
Career
Zhu Rongji's career in the government began in 1952 when he became the head of the fuel and energy management group in the State Planning Commission. He held various positions within the commission until 1958 when he was criticized for his opposition to Mao Zedong's "Great Leap Forward" policy. He was then sent to a school for reeducation and physical labor until 1975.
In 1979, Zhu Rongji was politically rehabilitated and became a key economic advisor to Deng Xiaoping, the leader of China's economic reforms. He played a significant role in the economic transformation of Shanghai as its mayor, focusing on the development of the Pudong special economic zone and modernizing the city's infrastructure.
In 1993, Zhu Rongji became the vice premier of the State Council and director of the People's Bank of China. He was known for his economic reforms and successful macroeconomic policies, which maintained high economic growth rates with low inflation. In 1998, he was appointed as the premier of the State Council, serving until 2003.
Contributions and Legacy
Zhu Rongji is considered one of the most influential advocates of market-oriented economic reforms in China. He played a crucial role in creating a favorable investment climate for foreign capital and was trusted and supported by many top leaders, including Jiang Zemin.
Zhu Rongji is known for his proficiency in English and his ability to speak extemporaneously. In his free time, he enjoys listening to Beijing opera. His wife, Lao An, held a position as a deputy chairman of the board of directors of the China International Engineering and Consulting company. They have a son and a daughter.
