Early Life and Education
Juscelino Kubitschek de Oliveira was born on September 12, 1902, in Diamantina, Minas Gerais, Brazil. His father, João César de Oliveira, was a traveling merchant, and his mother, Júlia Kubitschek, was a teacher of Czech descent.
Political Career
Entry into PoliticsKubitschek's political career began in 1934 when he was elected to the legislative assembly in the state of Minas Gerais.
Governorship of Minas Gerais
In 1950, he became the governor of Minas Gerais. During his tenure, he implemented ambitious development programs.
Presidency of Brazil (1956-1961)
Kubitschek was elected President of Brazil in 1956. He adopted a rapid development program, reducing taxes on foreign capital and promoting the growth of industries such as machinery, automobiles, and other high-tech sectors.
Construction of Brasília
In 1960, Kubitschek oversaw the relocation of the capital from Rio de Janeiro to a newly built city named Brasília. This move was intended to help exploit the country's interior resources.
Post-Presidency and Death
Ouster and Political BanKubitschek left office in 1961. After a military coup in 1964, he and former President Jânio Quadros were stripped of political rights for a decade.
Tragic Demise
Kubitschek died in a car accident on August 22, 1976. He is remembered today through the municipality of Presidente Kubitschek in Minas Gerais, named in his honor.
