Zinyat Valiyeva: Paralympic Archer from Azerbaijan
Early Life and DisabilityZinyat Valiyeva was born on May 6, 1974, in the Kechili village of Azerbaijan. At the age of 16, she experienced severe back pain on her way back from school, which resulted in paralysis of her legs. She has since used crutches to get around. Valiyeva later moved to Baku, where she completed her education at Baku State University.
Archery Career
After becoming physically disabled, Valiyeva became interested in archery and started representing Azerbaijan in international competitions. She participated in the 2006 and 2010 European Championships and the 2007, 2009, and 2011 World Championships. Her successful performances in the Turin qualifying tournament and the Stoke Mandeville qualification tournament earned her a spot at the 2012 Summer Paralympics.
Paralympic Games
Valiyeva competed at the 2012 Summer Paralympics in London, where she placed 17th in the world rankings as of September 18, 2011. In the mixed team event, she secured third place.
Recognition
In February 2016, Valiyeva was awarded the "Progress" medal by the President of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev, for her contributions to the development of the Paralympic movement in Azerbaijan.
