Zita Johann, born Elisabeth Johann, was an Austrian-American actress who rose to fame for her captivating performance as the alluring Princess Ankhesenamun in Karl Freund's horror classic "The Mummy" (1932), alongside Boris Karloff.
Early Life and Career
Johann was born on July 14, 1904, in a small village in the Banat region of present-day Romania, then part of Austria-Hungary. Her father, Stefan Johann, served in the hussar regiment and emigrated to the United States with his family in 1911. Johann began her acting journey by performing in school plays and later pursued theater as a profession. She made her Broadway debut in 1924 in the play "Man and the Masses" and first graced the silver screen in 1931 in David Wark Griffith's silent film "The Struggle."
Hollywood and Theater
In total, Johann appeared in eight films, including horror films such as "Raiders of the Living Dead" (1986). After her role in Archibald Joseph Cronin's "Grand Canary" (1934), she left the film industry and dedicated herself to theater. She played leading roles with Romanian-American actor John Houseman, her husband from 1929 to 1933, as well as the legendary Orson Welles. Notably, Johann always prayed before stepping onto the stage.
Philanthropy and Teaching
Johann's strong personality extended beyond the stage. She advocated for social causes, participated in fundraising for charities, and organized shows for American soldiers during World War II. She also taught acting to individuals with learning disabilities.
Personal Life
Johann married three times: to John Houseman, agent John McCormick, and economist and publisher Bernard E. Shedd. All three marriages ended in divorce. She had no children. Johann passed away on September 17, 1993, at the age of 89, from pneumonia in Nyack, New York. Her body was cremated, and her ashes were scattered in upstate New York.
