Early Life and Diagnosis
Zoe Jones, a three-year-old girl from Nashville, Tennessee, came into the world with a serious birth defect known as VACTERL. This rare condition affects multiple body systems, including the spine, anus, heart, tracheoesophageal tract, kidneys, and radial bones. Zoe was born with butterfly vertebrae, multiple heart defects, and tracheoesophageal anomalies.

Medical Challenges and Childhood
Zoe's first two years were spent in and out of the hospital, as her medical conditions required constant attention. Doctors initially gave her a 75% chance of survival, but her condition worsened after an initial surgery to repair her heart. Her heart began to enlarge, compressing her left lung and airway.

She underwent numerous procedures, including 12 operations, two open-heart surgeries, and survived seven cardiac arrests and five strokes. In December 2014, doctors at Vanderbilt University Hospital informed her parents that they had exhausted all treatment options and a heart-lung transplant was Zoe's only hope.

Breakthrough in Columbus, Ohio
Fortunately, the Nationwide Children's Hospital in Columbus, Ohio, took a different approach. In March 2015, Zoe was transferred to Ohio for a reevaluation of her heart and lungs.

Doctors at the hospital discovered that by blocking certain blood flow to her lungs, they could reduce blood pressure and make surgery a viable option. Within a few weeks, they scheduled the procedure, sparing Zoe from a lengthy wait on the transplant list.
Recovery and Progress
Zoe's recovery from the surgery was remarkably fast. Within 10 days, she was released from the hospital and allowed to return home to Nashville. Her heart and lungs continued to improve, and she was able to wean herself off the tracheostomy tube that had hindered her speech development.
Today, Zoe is thriving as a typical three-year-old. She is fully mobile and enjoys playing with her friends. She still faces the possibility of a future heart transplant, but her overall prognosis is promising.
VACTERL Association
VACTERL is a rare condition that affects one in 10,000 to 40,000 newborns. It encompasses a spectrum of birth defects that can affect various organ systems. Approximately 60-80% of individuals with VACTERL have spinal malformations, 60-90% have anal atresia or stenosis, 40-80% have heart defects, and 50-80% have tracheoesophageal fistulas. Kidney anomalies are present in approximately 50-80% of cases.
