Biography of Zoltan Varga
Zoltan Varga is a Hungarian football player and coach.Early Career
Varga began his football career in 1961 at the Hungarian club "Ferencvaros" and played for the club until 1968.
International Success
Between 1964 and 1968, he played 13 games for the Hungarian national team and won the Olympic Games in Tokyo in 1964 with the Hungarian team.
Escape and International Transfers
In 1968, during a game in Mexico, Varga escaped from the Hungarian team and was sentenced to death, as the escape was considered a crime in a socialist country. He managed to move to Belgium, where he played for "Standard" in Liege for one year.
Time in Germany
Varga then moved to Germany and played for Berlin's "Hertha" from 1969 to 1972. He became a favorite of local fans during his time there.
Scandal and Suspension
The season of 1971/1972 in the German Championship was marked by a scandal involving match-fixing. Varga was involved in these events and was fined 15,000 German marks. He was also banned from playing in the German Championship from January 23, 1972, to June 30, 1974.
Later Career
In 1972, Varga continued his career at the Scottish club "Aberdeen" for one season. In 1973, he transferred to the Dutch club "Ajax" and played 12 matches, scoring 2 goals. After serving his suspension in Germany, Varga joined "Borussia Dortmund" and played for three seasons. He then moved to the Belgian club "Gent," where he ended his playing career.
Coaching Career
From 1977 to 1983, Varga served as a player-coach for "Borussia Dortmund." He later coached several clubs in Germany. In 1997, Varga returned to Hungary and coached "Ferencvaros," "Dunaferr," "Diosgyor," and "Dor." Since 2003, he has been a technical advisor for the club "Dor."
