Early Life and Coaching Career

Zoran Gajić was born on December 28, 1958, in Pančevo, Yugoslavia. While he played volleyball at the amateur level, his true calling lay in coaching. At the age of 25, he began his coaching journey with youth teams in the Yugoslav second and first leagues.

In 1984, Gajić joined Vojvodina, where he remained until the 1992/93 season, serving as head coach from 1988/89. Faced with political turmoil and international sanctions, he made the difficult decision to leave Yugoslavia and seek opportunities abroad.

Success in Greece and Turkey

Gajić found success in Greece, leading Aris (1993/94 - 1994/95), Orestiada (1995/96, 1996/97, 2000/01), Olympiacos (1997/98 - 1999/2000), and AEK (2001/02) to numerous titles, including the Greek Championship and Cup.

He then moved to Turkey and coached Arçelik, serving as both head coach (2002/03) and manager (2003/04). Under his guidance, Arçelik won the Turkish Championship in 2002/03.

Triumph with Yugoslavia

From 1995 to 2002, Gajić served as head coach of the Yugoslav national team, leading them to unparalleled success. The team won the 2000 Olympics, the 2001 European Championship, and medals at the 1996 and 1998 Olympics, the 1996 and 1998 World Championships, and the 1995, 1997, and 1999 European Championships.

Coaching in Russia

In the 2004/05 season, Gajić returned to his home country to coach Lokomotiv Belogorye. However, his stay was cut short when he was offered the head coaching position of the Russian national team on February 1, 2005.

Gajić's appointment marked a pivotal moment in Russian volleyball history, as it was the first time a foreign coach had taken charge of the men's national team. With a wealth of experience and a proven track record of success, he embarked on a mission to guide Russia to Olympic glory in Beijing.
