Born in Cetinje, Princess Zorka was the eldest daughter of King Nikola I of Montenegro and his wife, Milena Vukotich. Her father had ascended to the throne as Prince of Montenegro upon the death of his uncle, Danilo II Petrović-Njegoš, in 1860. Princess Zorka received her education in Russia before returning to Montenegro.
Royal Alliance
King Nikola's astute diplomatic skills enabled him to arrange advantageous marriages for his daughters. Zorka's sister, Elena, married the future King Victor Emmanuel III of Italy.
Marriage to Prince Petar
Princess Zorka married Prince Petar Karađorđević, who later became King Petar I of Serbia in 1903, in a lavish ceremony held in Cetinje on August 1, 1883. The traditional Greek Orthodox wedding took place amidst grand festivities.
Children and Legacy
Princess Zorka and King Petar I welcomed five children into the world. Her untimely demise at the age of 25, during childbirth, left a profound void in the hearts of her family and the nation. She was laid to rest in the Church of Saint George in Topola, Serbia, and her remains were later transferred to Oplenac.
