Early Life and Education
Zuzana Roithová was born in Prague, Czechoslovakia, on January 30, 1953. After graduating from high school, she pursued a medical degree at Charles University in Prague, graduating in 1978. She later earned a postgraduate qualification in radiology in 1985.
Medical Career
Roithová began her medical career in 1978 at a hospital in Beroun. From 1980 to 1985, she worked at the University Hospital Motol in Prague. Later, from 1990 to 1998, she served as director of the Faculty Hospital in Vinohrady.
Political Career
In January 1998, Roithová was appointed Minister of Health of the Czech Republic, a position she held until June of that year. In 1998, she was elected to the Senate from Prague 10 district. In the Senate, she focused on healthcare, social policy, and European integration.
European Parliament and Presidential Candidacy
In 2004, Roithová became a member of the European Parliament from the European People's Party (EPP). She served in the Parliament until 2014. As a member of the EPP, she advocated for the internal market and consumer protection. Roithová also signed the Prague Declaration on European Conscience and Communism, condemning communist crimes.
In 2013, Roithová became one of three female candidates for President of the Czech Republic. She garnered over 80,000 signatures of support and became deputy chairperson of the KDU-ČSL party, which she represented in the elections. However, she finished sixth in the first round with 4.95% of the vote, failing to advance to the second round.
