Early Life and Ordination

Zygmunt Zimowski was born in Kupienin, Poland. He was ordained as a priest on May 27, 1973, and incardinated into the Diocese of Tarnów.

Academic and Vatican Service

He holds a licentiate in dogmatic theology from the Catholic University of Lublin and a doctorate in dogmatic theology from the Faculty of Theology at the University of Innsbruck. On February 1, 1983, he began working at the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith under Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger (later Pope Benedict XVI).

Bishop of Radom

On March 28, 2002, he was appointed bishop of Radom by Pope John Paul II. He was consecrated on May 25, 2002, by Cardinal Ratzinger. He served as chairman of the Episcopal Commission for the Doctrine of Faith, member of the Permanent Council, and delegate for pastoral care of Polish migrants within the Polish Bishops' Conference.

Archbishop and Vatican Official

On April 18, 2009, he was appointed president of the Pontifical Council for Pastoral Care of Health Care Workers. At the same time, he was raised to the dignity of archbishop. He remained president of the Pontifical Council until July 12, 2016.

Publications and Languages

Zimowski is the author of 120 publications, 40 pastoral letters, and several books and articles. He has taught ecclesiology at the Catholic University of Lublin and Cardinal Stefan Wyszyński University in Warsaw. In addition to Polish, he speaks Italian, German, English, French, and Russian.
