Blessed José Richard Díez
José Richard Díez was a beatified member of the Roman Catholic Church, a friar in the Augustinian monastic order, and a martyr who was the youngest of the eight Motril martyrs.
Early Life and Religious Vocation
Born into an impoverished family, Díez entered the novitiate of the Augustinian monastic order at the age of 17. In 1926, he took temporary monastic vows. However, he experienced a crisis of faith that year and left the monastery.
Return to the Monastery
After six years, Díez returned to the order in 1932. He made his final profession of vows in 1934, committing himself to a life of prayer, poverty, and obedience.
Martyrdom in the Spanish Civil War
When the Spanish Civil War broke out, Díez was living in the monastery in the city of Motril. On July 26, 1936, he and his fellow monks were expelled from the monastery by the revolutionary militia. Díez was shot and killed in the street that day.
Beatification and Legacy
On March 7, 1999, José Richard Díez was beatified together with the other Motril martyrs by Pope John Paul II. His memorial day in the Catholic Church is celebrated on May 5th. Díez's life and martyrdom serve as an example of courage, faith, and fidelity to religious vows in the face of persecution.
