Abdul Khaliq Mahjub: Sudanese Communist Leader and Political Activist

Abdul Khaliq Mahjub was a prominent Sudanese political figure, a founding member of the Sudanese Communist Party (SCP), and its General Secretary. Born in Sudan in 1926, Mahjub's political journey began at a young age.

Early Life and Education

In 1946, Mahjub graduated from secondary school and enrolled in the Faculty of Arts at Cairo University in Egypt. During his university years, he actively participated in the Communist and national liberation movements in Egypt.

In 1948, Mahjub was arrested and expelled from Egypt for his involvement in Egyptian communist organizations. Upon returning to Sudan, he joined the SCP and quickly rose through the ranks.

Leadership of the SCP

In 1949, Mahjub was elected General Secretary of the SCP's Central Committee. He played a pivotal role in organizing and strengthening the party, becoming its chief strategist and ideologue.

Anti-Imperialism and Political Activism

In 1958, Mahjub became General Secretary of the Anti-Imperialist Front, a progressive political organization. During General Abboud's dictatorship, starting in 1961, Mahjub faced persecution and arrests for his steadfast opposition to military rule.

Collaboration and Conflict with the Revolutionary Government

In 1968, Mahjub was elected to the Sudanese Constituent Assembly. After the May Revolution of 1969, the SCP initially supported the military junta led by Jaafar Nimeiri. However, tensions between the military and the SCP escalated, culminating in Mahjub's expulsion to Egypt in 1970.

Arrest, Trial, and Execution

Upon his return to Sudan in June 1970, Mahjub and other communist leaders were arrested. In July 1971, he was accused of involvement in a coup attempt and sentenced to death by a military tribunal. On July 28, 1971, Mahjub was executed by hanging.

Legacy and Writings

Throughout his life, Mahjub remained a vocal advocate for national liberation and communist principles. He left behind a collection of writings on African communism and the role of the SCP in Sudan's political landscape. His contributions continue to shape the political discourse in Sudan and beyond.
